Project Updates

Thank you for your continued interest in the BQE reconstruction project. NYCDOT wants to take this opportunity to share some information on the project’s current status:

NYCDOT wants to make clear that the project is in its very early stages of development.

We recognize that the two construction concepts NYCDOT presented have, understandably, raised significant community concerns. NYCDOT is exploring other concepts, including options (like the Brooklyn Heights Association’s proposal) that utilize portions of Brooklyn Bridge Park. This work requires significant engineering analysis, and we ask for your patience as we continue to study these proposals. NYCDOT will also be bringing in a broader set of experts and creative thinkers to look at the project overall.

project timeline

NYCDOT has yet to begin the federal environmental review process, which we anticipate beginning later this year and lasting approximately two years. All of the comments and concerns raised in last year’s public meetings will be considered in the environmental review process, and in addition, there will be a number of new opportunities to share your feedback during this process.

This environmental review process will consider multiple options for construction, not just the two preliminary concepts presented in September.

Further information on the National Environmental Policy Act process (NEPA) can be found at

Design Build authority allows NYCDOT to hire a designer and contractor as a combined team in order to work more efficiently and solve any issues that arise in real-time.

Design Build does not mean less community input. In consultation with the community, the federal environmental review process will help establish a project “envelope” in which the Design Build team can build.

In the weeks and months ahead, we will continue to engage with neighborhoods and stakeholders from all along the project corridor, and we look forward to hearing input on all aspects of this critical effort.
